Entertaiment has become an umbrella term for the burgeoning industries that create, distribute and promote entertainment. It can be anything from an individual choosing a private entertainment such as a book, film or music from the vast array now available to him, to a couple enjoying a dinner for two; to banquets adapted for a larger group, to a performance intended for thousands. It is often associated with amusement, but the experience of being entertained may also be serious or even have a religious dimension. The word is derived from intertenere, or hold inside, from the Latin prefix inter and Indo-European root ten.
