The Daily News App Review

Daily News covers local and national news from around the world. Its award-winning writers and columnists deliver the very best in news, politics and celebrity gossip. Daily News also brings New York City exclusives and sports coverage like no other newspaper, including the Yankees, Mets, Giants, and Jets.

With a history dating back to 1919, Daily News was the first tabloid newspaper published in the United States. At its peak, it had one of the largest circulations of any paper in the country and operated out of the iconic art deco Daily News Building. The paper primarily specialized in bold headlines and sensational news, although it did cover political wrongdoing as well as social intrigue such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. It also developed a strong staff of photographers and was an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service.

In recent years, the News has moved more to the left than its crosstown rival the New York Post, perhaps in part as a counterbalance to conservative polemics in that paper. The News is still a reliable news source but, like other tabloids, it tends to emphasize bold headlines rather than calm facts and has taken on crusades that may have hurt its reputation for objectivity.

As of 2019, the News is owned by Tronc, which bought it in 2017 for $1. Its editorial board is the same as it was in 2017.

The Daily News app needs lots of work. Articles get repeated 3-4 times as you scroll through top stories and photos aren’t properly framed. It’s also really slow to load and doesn’t have the same feel as other news apps that are updated more frequently.

News apps that provide curated news to fit the time you have available are great. Vox, for example, offers a daily “Today, Explained” video that summarizes major news topics in around 5 minutes. The WSJ also produces a daily “What’s News” video that covers the major news of the day in around 10 minutes.

The Daily News has a AllSides Media Bias rating of Skews Left, which indicates that the news outlet tends to lean in favor of liberal, progressive or left-wing thought and policy agendas. It has a Reliable, Analysis/Fact Reporting ratings of 80%.
